In fact, its more general form, called photokeratitis, is a very real concern in our countries, caused by the harsh sun, especially in deserts or at high altitudes. What is snow blindness or photokeratitis?

Snow blindness is a painful inflammation of the cornea (the transparent front part of the eye) and the conjunctiva (the membrane lining the inside of the eyelids and the white of the eye). It is caused by excessive exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. The name 'snow blindness' comes from the fact that snow is an excellent UV reflector: it can reflect up to 80% of the sun's rays directly into your eyes. This means that even on a cloudy day, the intensity of reflected UV rays is high.

In a broader sense, this condition is called photokeratitis, and it isn't limited to snow. Any intense source of UV can cause it: arc welding without proper protection is a common cause, as is prolonged sun exposure on the water, at the beach, and especially in desert areas or at high altitudes where UV intensity is at its peak without us always realising it.

The dangers of UV rays in the African context

In Africa, sunshine is generally very intense. In many countries, the proximity to the Equator means the sun is often at its zenith, and its rays travel a shorter distance through the atmosphere, losing less of their UV intensity.

The role of deserts and high altitude

Desert areas, such as the Sahara or the Kalahari, are particularly high-risk. The light-coloured, abundant sand reflects UV rays significantly, increasing overall exposure. Furthermore, the lack of dense vegetation and natural obstacles means the sunlight is omnipresent and intense, with little shade for shelter.

At high altitudes, the situation is even more critical. For every 1000 metres of elevation, UV intensity increases by about 10 to 12%. This means that residents and travellers in mountainous regions of Africa, like Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Toubkal in Morocco, or the Ethiopian Highlands, are exposed to much higher UV levels than those at sea level. Even if you don’t see any snow, the UV radiation is strong enough to cause significant eye damage.

What are the symptoms of an eye "sunburn"?

The symptoms of snow blindness or photokeratitis do not usually appear immediately after exposure. There is often a delay of a few hours (3 to 12 hours) before they manifest, which can make the connection to UV exposure less obvious.

Common symptoms

The signs of an eye sunburn include:

  • Intense eye pain: This is often the most striking symptom, described as a gritty feeling or the sensation of having sand in the eye, sometimes very sharp.
  • Burning or stinging sensation: The eyes may feel like they are burning.
  • Excessive tearing: The eyes produce a lot of tears in an attempt to defend themselves.
  • Red eyes: The conjunctiva becomes irritated, and blood vessels dilate.
  • Extreme sensitivity to light (photophobia): Even dim light can become unbearable.
  • Blurred vision: Inflammation of the cornea can temporarily affect the sharpness of your vision.
  • Eyelid spasms (blepharospasm): The eyelids may twitch uncontrollably.

These symptoms are often very unpleasant and can be alarming. Fortunately, in most cases, they are temporary and disappear within 24 to 48 hours, once the cornea has had time to heal. However, repeated, unprotected exposure can have more serious long-term consequences.

Prevention: The best protection

The good news is that snow blindness and photokeratitis are entirely preventable with simple measures.

Choosing the right glasses: A must

The most effective protection against UV rays is wearing proper sunglasses. But be careful, not all sunglasses are created equal.

  • UV 400 or 100% UV rating: Make sure your sunglasses filter 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. This information should be clearly stated on the label or frame. Don't rely solely on the dark colour of the lenses; dark lenses without UV protection can be more dangerous because they cause your pupils to dilate, allowing even more harmful UV rays to enter your eye.
  • Protection category: For extreme conditions (mountains, desert, bright light), choose category 3 or 4 lenses. Category 4 offers the most protection and is recommended for high mountains or very bright deserts. Please note, category 4 sunglasses are not suitable for driving.
  • Wraparound shape: Sunglasses with a wraparound design or side shields are ideal as they prevent UV rays from reaching your eyes from the sides.
  • Polarised lenses: While not essential for UV protection, polarised lenses reduce glare from light reflecting off surfaces like sand or water, improving visual comfort.

Other important measures

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat or a cap: This provides extra shade that reduces direct UV exposure to your eyes and face.
  • Limit exposure during peak hours: Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., UV intensity is at its highest. If possible, reduce your time outdoors during these hours.
  • Never look directly at the sun: This is an obvious mistake but one that is occasionally made, for example during an eclipse, causing severe damage to the retina.
